Process
Angel tells a narrative rooted in feelings and impulses guided by material and technique. The process of making Angel began with an enlarged bobbin lace stitch. My aim was to experiment with attaching and stitching multiple fabrics, making visible fabrics overlapping and diverging, intertwining and moving apart. Because I work on a scale around the size of my body each piece feels like an extension of myself, the movements and gestures that go into the stitching are reflected back into the fabric. I continued exploring without a fixed stitch pattern, varying between quick, disordered stitches and detailed, thoughtful ones. The materials I chose, ranging from string and yarn to sheer gauzy fabric and jersey, were intentionally diverse in texture and type. I wanted to challenge myself by using materials that are typically considered unappealing or discomforting.
Additionally, the central cross is constructed from four molds made against the bodice of a an abstracted silhouette of a pregnant woman. I found inspiration in the symbolic shapes of pregnancy — circular, bulbous forms that embody new life.
